Getting To Know Your Materials

---------- 3 min read ----------

As an avid athlete or fitness enthusiast, understanding the materials used in your athletic apparel is crucial for making informed choices. Polyester, nylon, and cotton are among the most common fabrics used, each with its own set of pros and cons. Typically, these materials are combined with elastic fabrics to ensure flexibility and ease of movement during physical activities.

Polyester fibers boast the widest range of weight and feel depending on use case. The luxurious fibers we choose to use in our jerseys boasts an incredibly soft feeling reminiscent of silk. Although, it offers an incredible comfortable feel polyester falls short in breathability when compared to cotton. However, the fabric is wrinkle-resistant ensuring that your garments maintain a neat and polished appearance with minimal effort. Additionally, its moisture-wicking properties draw sweat away from the body promoting a dry and comfortable experience during intense physical activities. This versatility makes polyester an ideal material for those who value not only the luxurious touch of silk-like fibers, but also the convenience of easy maintenance and performance-enhancing features in their athletic apparel.

Nylon is a great fabric for its outstanding durability and resistance to wear and tear. In most active use cases, nylon possess a thicker composition compared to polyester and cotton. Nylon offers a sturdier option for athletic apparel making it particularly well-suited for activities that demand resilience. However, this enhanced durability comes with trade-offs such as softness, breathability, and lightweight properties. This makes it less suitable for individuals who prioritize lightweight and airy garments during their workouts, as nylon may not provide the same level of comfort and ventilation. Its robust nature ensures that garments made from nylon can withstand the rigors of demanding physical activities. These are reason why we believe nylon is an exceptional material for cycling bibs and shorts as it can sustain higher intensity for longer as in the case of continuous pedaling for hours. Additionally, nylon does offer similar moisture-wicking properties as polyester.

Cotton, renowned for its breathability allows air to circulate freely ensuring a cool and comfortable experience during workouts. Like polyester, cotton comes in a wide range of weight and softness depending on use case. Although not as soft as some polyester fibers, the gentle feel on the skin makes cotton a strong option for athletic wear. A unique attribute of cotton is its ability to provide warmth in cooler temperatures while remaining breathable in warmer weather. The hypoallergenic nature of cotton further enhances its appeal catering to individuals with sensitive skin. On the flip side, cotton is prone to wrinkling, potentially requiring additional maintenance like ironing. Its much slower drying time may pose challenges to athletes during intense workouts, and the fabric's tendency to shrink when exposed to heat can affect garment size and fit. Ultimately, the choice for cotton in activewear hinges on a balance between its favorable qualities and considerations for specific use cases.

In conclusion, the choice between polyester, nylon, and cotton ultimately depends on individual preferences and the specific requirements of your workout routine. Whether prioritizing lightweight, comfort, durability, or breathability, understanding the distinct characteristics of each material empowers you to make informed decisions when selecting your next piece of athletic apparel.
